Declaration on specialised operation (SPO)

Specialised operations (SPO) are applicable to all operations utilising the aircraft for specialised activities such as

  • agriculture

  • construction

  • photography

  • surveying

  • observations

  • aerial surveillance

  • advertising flight

  • aerobatic flight

  • parachute jump

  • towing of sailplanes

  • maintenance check flights

  • other...

Authorization

  • Specialised operations are not generally subject to authorization, but a declaration must be completed and sent to the Icelandic Transportation Authority. Once confirmation of receipt of the declaration has been received, operations can commence.

  • High risk SPO requiring a specific authorisation from the Icelandic Transport Authority is excluded from this.

Rules and Regulations
  • Only aeroplanes covered by Regulation (EU) No 2018/1139 may be used for specialised operations.

  • Annex VIII to Regulation (EU) No 965/2012 (Part-SPO) contains the provisions applicable to commercial specialised operations with aircraft as well as non-commercial specialised operations with complex aircraft.

  • Non-commercial specialised operation of other-than-complex motor-powered aircraft shall be operated in accordance with the provisions set out in Annex VII (Part-NCO) of the Regulation

  • The requirements for operators intending to conduct specialised operations are set out in Annex III to the same Regulation, Part-ORO (ORO.GEN, ORO.DEC, ORO.SPO).
