Akureyri Hospital (SAk) has implemented a new digital medication prescribing system for cancer treatments, known as the Cato system, which significantly improves the safety and efficiency of treatment for patients receiving chemotherapy. The system was first adopted at Landspítali (the National University Hospital of Iceland) at the end of 2022 and has now been introduced at SAk.

At the 2025 annual meeting of Akureyri Hospital, Björn Gunnarsson, specialist physician and Clinical Director of Quality and Safety, gave a presentation on developments in quality and patient safety. He described the journey that healthcare systems around the world have undertaken in recent decades and emphasized that safety must not only be a goal, but a deeply rooted part of the culture and daily practice.

The EDPB and the European Commission have adopted the first joint guidelines on the interaction of the GDPR with other regulations. Work is underway to clarify the interaction of additional regulations with the GDPR.

The enrollment of all new students moving from primary to upper-secondary school has been completed successfully. Thanks to concerted efforts by upper-secondary schools and the authorities, the process finished earlier than in previous years. In total, 5,131 new students applied for places in upper-secondary school for autumn 2025—454 more than last year.

A four-year collaborative research and development agreement between Land and Forest Iceland and the University of Iceland's environmental and resource science program has been established. This initiative aims to improve our understanding of the ecosystem services provided by Iceland's forests and their value to society. The agreement, signed shortly before Christmas, presents significant project opportunities for the University of Iceland's graduate students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees.

Act No. 81/2025, which amends the Health Records Act, No. 55/2009, has come into force. The purpose of these amendments is to improve efficiency in healthcare services, promote digital development, and enhance patient safety.

Holiday and December supplements for disability pension, partial disability pension and medical- and rehabilitation allowance have been calculated and the payment plans for individuals entitled to these payments have been updated on My Pages. The holiday supplements will be paid on 1 July and the December supplement on 1 December.
