All first-year applicants have secured a place in upper-secondary school – enrollment completed earlier than in previous years

All new students assigned a school – more admitted to their first choice

The upper-secondary schools were able to accommodate every new applicant who met the admission requirements, so all qualifying applications were approved.

Of the 5,131 applicants:

• 4,136 (81 %) were admitted to the school they ranked first

• 669 (12.8 %) were admitted to their second choice

• 204 (3.9 %) were admitted to their third choice

• 122 (2.3 %) were offered places at schools they had not listed, where space was still available

Although the share of first-choice placements is lower than in previous years, applicants could list three preferred schools this year instead of two, which made the allocation process smoother.

New enrolment portal improves service and security

For the first time, a new enrolment portal—developed by the Directorate of Education and School Services in collaboration with Digital Iceland—was used this year. The portal has markedly improved the applicant experience and greatly enhanced security throughout the application process.

Broader study options for a diverse student body

The Ministry of Education and Children, the Directorate of Education and School Services, and upper-secondary schools have made it a priority to ensure every new student secures a study place. Programme offerings have been expanded to serve a diverse cohort: more vocational pathways, increased capacity in practical training, and stronger support for students from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
