Safety of pedestrians

Pedestrians shall use

  • sidewalk or footpath

  • the part of the road outside the roadway

  • the road edge, left versus traffic and never more than two road users parallel

Pedestrian riding a bicycle or moped

  • be used as a right-hand side walker

  • can be used on the opposite side of the road due to danger or special circumstances

Crossing road or bike path

Special care shall be taken with regard to approaching vehicles. Ideally, it should be used:

  • pedestrian walkway or other walkway if nearby

  • tunnel and bridge for pedestrians

  • otherwise walking across the road and as near to a junction

Where traffic is controlled by the police or by traffic lights, the road may only be crossed by an overpass when road user

  • green light for pedestrian traffic

  • the police indicate by signalling that pedestrian traffic is permitted

Traffic on footpaths

All road users on paths and sidewalks should aim to

  • in force if the right hand traffic

  • to overtake on the left

As surface markings distinguish paths for walking and cycling, it is worth respecting those markings.
