All holders of a flight crew licence are required to hold a special Part-MED medical certificate. Following a satisfactory aero-medical examination by an AME performed in accordance with Part-MED requirements, an AME shall issue a Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate. Class 1 and Class 2 medical certificates have different periods of validity.
Class 1 Part-MED medical certificate:
Applicable to the commercial pilot licence and flight engineer licence.
Valid for 12 months for commercial pilots in single-pilot aircraft until they reach the age of 40, after which a certificate is valid for 6 months.
Valid for 12 months for commercial pilots of multi-pilot aircraft until they reach the age of 60, after which a certificate shall be valid for 6 months.
Valid for 12 months for flight engineers.
Class 2 Part-MED health certificate:
Applicable to student pilots, private pilots and sailplane pilots.
Valid for 60 months until the age of 40
Valid for 24 months, aged 40 years and 50 years
Valid for 12 months after the age of 50

Article 1.2.5.2.3.1 of the regulation on certificates issued by the Icelandic Civil Aviation Authority no. 400/2008 applies for ultralight pilot licenses.
Aircraft mechanics and dispatchers do not need medical certificates.
