Notify the correct driver for a traffic fine

In general

If you got a ticket for a traffic violation but you were not the driver, you need to let the police know who was driving.

You should not pay the fine. Contact the police district that issued the fine.

You can find the date of the violation and the district that issues the fine in an notice you recieved in the Iceland.is mailbox or by mail.

Report the correct driver

You can inform the police about the correct driver by:

  • calling the police district

  • mailing a completed form, which comes with the ticket

  • send an email with all the necessary information

Information to provide

You will need to provide the following details:

  • your name and national identification number

  • your contact information such as phone number or email address

  • driver's name and national identification number

  • case number from the ticket notice

When a notification is sent

Police review the notification and contact the driver you reported.

If the police approve your report, the responsibility for the fine will be transferred to the person you reported as the driver.
