Reflectors

Why reflectors?

In darkness, vulnerable road users (walking, cycling) are not very visible despite the lights provided by the lampposts and the driving lights of cars and therefore the use of reflectors is important and in some cases necessary.

It is a fact that drivers see vulnerable road users with reflectors five times earlier than otherwise, and therefore the use of reflectors can make the difference between life and death.

Everyone should use reflectors, both children and adults. Children are not as visible as adults and can also make impulsive decisions without thinking about the dangers surrounding them. It is important that parents use reflection to show their children a good example.

Where should reflectors be worn?

The reflectors should be visible and are best placed in the following locations:

  • Sleeve edges

  • Hanging alongside the sides

  • Shoes or bottom of trouser legs

The reflector then acts as a flashing light when light shines on them. The sooner and better the drivers detect vulnerable road users, the less likely they are to be involved in an accident.

Reflectors

In addition to acquiring a retro-reflecting badges to hang or attach to the clothes, garments and bags can be found with reflections in them. There should be a wide selection of winter coats, jogging clothes and school backpacks with reflecting material in them.

Where do you get reflections?

Below is a list of parties that the Icelandic Transport Authority has received information about selling or giving out reflectors or reflective vests. If someone is missing from the list, please send us an e-mail at fraedsla@samgongustofa.is.

In addition to the list above, reflectors are to be found in the drawers and cupboards of most homes.
