According to Article 5 of the Patients' Rights Act, a patient who does not speak Icelandic or uses sign language shall be provided with an interpretation of information. Healthcare professionals must ensure that patients who do not speak Icelandic or use sign language understand the information provided.

A patient has the right to information about:

  1. health status, including medical information on status and prognosis

  2. the planned treatment, with information about its progress, risks, and benefits

  3. other possible remedies than the planned treatment, and the consequences if no action is taken

  4. the possibility of seeking the opinion of another doctor or other healthcare professionals

It shall be recorded in the patient's medical records that information in accordance with this article has been provided. Information in accordance with this article shall be given as soon as possible and in a way that the patient can understand it.
