What about remote locations like Látrabjarg?
Látrabjarg and other remote locations in the Westfjords offer a longer duration of totality than many other areas. For this reason, a high volume of visitors is expected to try to travel there.
However, space is limited at these locations, and infrastructure is significantly scarcer than in urban areas. Access roads can be narrow, parking is tight, and essential services such as restrooms, fuel stations, and food options are highly limited. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and travel times may be much longer than anticipated. Furthermore, emergency response times in remote areas will be delayed.
Visitors choosing more remote locations must plan their journey thoroughly, factor in extra travel time, and be prepared for limited services.
Will there be access restrictions to certain areas in the Westfjords?
Yes. Temporary access restrictions and traffic management will be implemented in various parts of the Westfjords to manage crowd sizes, enhance safety, and ensure emergency responders have clear access if necessary. Visitors are urged to follow all signs and instructions, respect road closures, and expect longer travel times.
Southern Westfjords: Örlygshafnarvegur (Route 612) and Rauðasandsvegur (Route 614) will operate as one-way roads starting at 12:00 (12:00 PM) on August 12, 2026. Following the event, traffic will be systematically guided back along the same routes.
Bolafjall: The road leading to the top of Bolafjall will be closed to general traffic. Visitors will be transported to the summit via shuttle buses, and dedicated parking will be available at the shuttle departure points. This arrangement is necessary to manage traffic flow and ensure safety on an exposed mountain site.
Other areas may also see temporary restrictions, limited parking, or controlled access depending on local conditions on the day.
