Designated viewing areas

The following designated viewing areas have been identified:

  • Seltjarnarnes:

    Suðurströnd

  • Reykjavík:

    Ægisíða

  • Garðabær:

    Álftanes – the shoreline west of the sports area

  • Hafnarfjörður:

    Hamarinn (car park by Flensborg Secondary School) and Ástjörn (car park by the Haukar sports area)

Traffic restrictions

Seltjarnarnes – Suðurströnd

Suðurströnd will be closed to vehicle traffic from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The road will be closed at Vivaldi Field / the swimming pool on the eastern side, and at Lindarbraut and Nesbali on the western side. All side streets leading to Suðurströnd will also be closed.

Visitors are advised to use the car parks at the swimming pool, Austurströnd and Eiðistorg.

Seltjarnarnes – Norðurströnd

Norðurströnd west of Lindarbraut will be closed to vehicle traffic from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Visitors are advised to use the car parks at Austurströnd and Eiðistorg.

Seltjarnarnes – Grótta

Access to Grótta will not be permitted on 12 August. The causeway to Grótta will be covered by the tide during the total eclipse.

The access road to Grótta will be closed at Lindarbraut from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Reykjavík

Suðurgata will be closed to vehicle traffic at Hringbraut from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All side streets connected to Suðurgata will also be closed, except Þórsgata, which will remain open for traffic to Skerjafjörður.

Ægisíða will be closed to vehicle traffic at Hofsvallagata, Fornhagi and Dunhagi from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Lynghagi and Starhagi will also be closed to vehicle traffic during this time.

Garðabær

A one-way traffic system will be in place on Álftanesvegur and Suðurnesvegur from the roundabout at the Bessastaðir junction between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Visitors are advised to use the car parks at the sports area and the swimming pool, as well as the fields west of the sports area.

  • Hafnarfjörður – Víðistaðatún (Echolalia Eclipse Festival) (All surrounding streets will be closed to vehicle traffic. Dedicated shuttle buses and e-scooters will transport ticket-holders from designated parking hubs elsewhere in Hafnarfjörður).
