The European Council summit
15th May 2023
The European Council summit will be held in Harpa on 16 and 17 May. The impact of the summit is already being felt, as is shown in the following photo from Austurstræti from yesterday.
The summit is expected to have some impact on the daily lives of the inhabitants of the greater Reykjavík area these days. For safety reasons, streets around Harpa will be closed to vehicle traffic during the meeting, but it will be possible to move around the area on foot and by bike. This does not apply, however, to the area closest to Harpa, which will be closed to the public.
Traffic delays can also be expected in the entire capital area due to the driving of delegations to police escort to and from Keflavík Airport and Reykjavík Airport. The impact will be most on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Road users in the capital area should, therefore, please point out that you estimate longer than usual travel time to travel between places on the days of the summit. This also applies to road users who intend to travel on Reykjanesbraut, that is between the Suðurnes region and the capital area on those same days – not least air passengers.
There will be no public transport within the closure area. Buses travel on changed routes during the closure, that is from 21.00 on Monday 15 May to 19.00 on Wednesday 17 May.
Further information is available on the website of the council, the police and Strætó.
