About the European Council Summit

The European Council Summit will take place in Reykjavík between May 16 and 17 2023. This is the fourth time in the 74-year history of the Institute that leaders from member states have gathered for a Council summit.

The summit will reaffirm the fundamental values of the Council of Europe and the Council's support for Ukraine. The emphasis will be on strengthening the work of the Council of Europe with the foundational values of the institution . . . human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

The Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland are the hosts of the meeting, and in addition to the member states of the Council of Europe, representatives of the EU, the United Nations and the OSCE, among others, are invited to address the meeting.
