Obligations of pharmaceutical companies in medicine shortages

Pharmaceutical companies obliged to report medicine shortages in good time

Cooperation between pharmaceutical companies, the Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA) and healthcare professionals is important to counter the effects of medicine shortages. Good information flow and sufficient advance notice are key to finding solutions. In this way, medicine shortages can either be prevented or their impact on patients reduced.

Marketing authorisation holders are obliged to report medicine shortages to IMA at least two months in advance under the Medicinal Products Act, No. 100/2020.

How to report

Reports via Ísland.is

Individual medicine shortage reports are submitted via Ísland.is, which requires an employee of the company to authenticate with electronic ID.

Report of a medicine shortage by a marketing authorisation holder

If new information needs to be submitted, such as changed dates for a medicine shortage that has already been reported, it shall be sent to lyfjaskortur@lyfjastofnun.is.

Reports via web services

IMA offers an application programming interface (API service) that enables companies to submit medicine shortage reports and retrieve information electronically. The service is intended to make the process more efficient and reduce friction in communication. The API service is free of charge and is an optional addition to the standard route.

Reports from foreign parties

Foreign parties cannot use the electronic form, but they may submit a medicine shortage report on a Word form.

Reports to the European Medicines Agency (EMA)

Marketing authorisation holders are obliged to report all shortages of centrally authorised medicinal products in the European Shortages Monitoring Platform (ESMP).
