Training centers for inspectors of vehicles

9th July 2024

Next year (2025) inspectors who start working at vehicle inspection bodies must complete training at approved training centers for the Icelandic Transport Authority to be able to certify them. All inspectors already working as such will also be required to complete a refresher course at an approved training center before the end of next year (December 31, 2025) in order to continue working.

These requirements are set out in the regulation on vehicle inspection and in the curriculum for the basic training and further training of inspectors, which can be found on the website of the Icelandic Transport Authority, Training and recognition of inspectors | Ísland.is (island.is)

Training centers that will offer courses for inspectors must be approved by the Icelandic Transport Authority. They must meet the requirements for resources and responsibility as described in the curriculum. Vehicle inspection bodies can apply to operate an approved training center, but independent training providers and schools can also do so.

In order to be able to certify new inspectors as early as next year, it is important that one or more training centers be granted approval before the end of the year. Therefore, the Icelandic Transport Authority encourages vehicle inspection bodies and educational providers working in the field of car technology and mechanical technology to look into the possibilities of establishing an accredited training center.

Further information on the activities of training centers and the requirements in the curriculum for the basic training and refresher training of inspectors is provided by the department of vehicle and infrastructure, please send an email to okutaeki@samgongustofa.is.
