Vehicle ownership transfer
When a vehicle changes ownership, the ownership transfer must be reported to the Icelandic Transport Authority (ICETRA) as soon as possible. Registering the change of ownership ensures that the correct party is legally responsible for the vehicle, including matters related to fees, insurance, and traffic violations.
Before reporting the transfer
Before completing the purchase or sale of a vehicle, it is important to carefully review the following:
Liens – whether the vehicle is subject to any liens
Damage history – whether the vehicle has sustained damage
Other factors that may affect the transaction
Further information can be found in the article buying and selling a vehicle.
Ownership transfer process
The seller completes the notification of change of ownership and pays the registration fee.
The buyer, co-owner, or registered user, as applicable, signs the notification electronically.
The ownership transfer is then automatically registered in the vehicle register.
A confirmation of the registered ownership transfer is sent to the inbox of both the seller and the buyer on Ísland.is.
Cost
An ownership transfer costs 3.041 ISKwhich the seller pays upon registration. A receipt for the payment of the ownership transfer is sent to the seller’s inbox on Ísland.is.
