It is possible to register more than one owner of a vehicle. If a co-owner is added or removed it must be reported.
Role and responsibilities of a co-owner
A co-owner and a primary owner have the same rights and responsibilities. Ownership shares are not registered separately. Public charges are issued to the primary owner.
The requirements for registering a co-owner are that
Vehicle taxes and any other outstanding charges have been paid
The individuals are at least 18 years old
The process
The owner fills out the notification and pays for the registration.
The co-owner confirms and signs the notification electronically.
The co-owner registration is updated in the vehicle register.
Cost
A co-owner registration or removal costs 1.222 ISK which the owner pays upon registration.
Change in ownership order
To change the order of owners, a special paper form must be submitted to the Icelandic Transport Authority. This cannot be done electronically.
