Safety in Air Transport and the Importance of Operating Licenses
6th May 2025
In the investigative news program, Kveikur, aired on April 15, 2025, concerns were raised regarding individuals selling and performing flights without the necessary certifications or licenses. The Icelandic Transport Authority urges all individuals, companies, and organisations purchasing air-transport services to verify that the service provider holds all required approvals and valid licenses.

According to law, operating an aircraft for commercial purposes, such as carrying passengers for compensation, is prohibited without a valid Air Operator Certificate (AOC). These certificates are issued only when strict safety requirements are met, covering areas such as aircraft operation, maintenance, as well as pilot training and medical fitness. Additionally, certified air operators are subject to more rigorous oversight compared to those engaged in general aviation, i.e., non-commercial flights.
