Repeated Inspections of Inflatable Liferafts
19th September 2025
The Icelandic Transport Authority has conducted random inspections of inflatable liferafts, which were examined by a service provider since the middle of last year. These inspections revealed instances where the condition of the liferafts was not satisfactory.

To safeguard the safety of seafarers, Samgöngustofa has decided to invalidate all inspections of inflatable liferafts conducted by this service provider since the middle of last year. Vessels concerned are therefore deemed unseaworthy under the Shipping Act until a repeated inspection of their inflatable liferafts has taken place.
The inspections must be performed by an approved service provider, and a list of such providers is available on Samgöngustofa’s website. Inspections of the relevant liferafts carried out before the end of 2025 will be free of charge for the operators.
The operators of the affected vessels have already received a notification and detailed instructions on the next steps. This is an important safety matter, and Samgöngustofa emphasises good cooperation to ensure corrective measures are taken.
