Passenger rights in case of flight cancellations

Due to a high number of inquiries, the Icelandic Transport Authority would like to draw attention to the rights of air passengers when a flight is cancelled.
If a flight is cancelled, passengers are entitled to choose one of the following options:
cancel the journey and receive a full refund
be rebooked on the next available flight
be rebooked on a flight at a later date
If the cancellation is due to the airline discontinuing a route, the airline is still obligated to transport the passenger to their final destination, should the passenger choose that option.
It is important to wait for an official cancellation notice from the airline. If a passenger cancels the flight on their own before receiving such notice, this may affect their right to a refund.
