On-site inspections of diving operations

13th June 2025

Diving is a popular recreational activity and an important professional field in Iceland. It is widely practiced in tourism, for example in Silfra at Þingvellir National Park, but also plays a role in construction work, fish farming, and other underwater operations.

In order to ensure safety of users, diving activities in Iceland are subject to rules and regulations. These are set out in Act No. 81/2018 and Regulation No. 535/2001. They include requirements for individuals who dive or teach diving, as well as for the equipment and facilities used.

Under these laws, the Icelandic Transport Authority and the Icelandic Coast Guard have the authority to carry out inspections of diving operations. It has now been decided to step up on-site inspections over the coming months. The Coast Guard will conduct the inspections and will begin in Silfra. Other popular diving locations will be included in subsequent visits.

The goal is to promote safe, responsible, and professional diving services for all users.
