New Drone Regulations Take Effect in Iceland
5th December 2024
Iceland has implemented new European Union regulations on drone operations through Regulation No. 1360/2024.
The rules categorize drone activities into three groups:
Open category: For simple flights by hobbyists and professionals, with a focus on safety.
Specific category: For more complex operations, such as beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flights, requiring risk assessments and authorization.
Certified category: For larger drones and higher-risk operations, with requirements similar to those for manned aviation.
All drone operators are now required to register at www.flydrone.is. Pilots flying drones weighing over 250 g must pass a test and obtain a competency certificate.
The new regulations aim to enhance safety and align with EU standards (Regulations No. 2019/945 and 2019/947). Further information is available on the Icelandic Transport Authority’s website.
