Inspection of rescue and safety equipment

19th March 2024

The life-saving and safety equipment of a ship shall always be inspected when its validity expires.

Icelandic Transport Authority pier

The Icelandic Transport Authority wants to emphasize, to prevent misunderstanding, that rescue and safety equipment of ships (such as lifeboats, launching equipment - pressure-membranes, distress flares, etc.), shall always be inspected, tested or renewed when the period of validity of the equipment expires. An example is that rubber lifeboats shall be inspected every 12 months by an authorized service provider. These inspections are independent of other inspections of the ship.

It is important that owners and operators are aware that despite the changes in the arrangements for ship inspections (such as equipment inspection, machinery and electrical inspection, bottom inspection, etc.) no changes have been made regarding when rescue and safety equipment must be tested, inspected or renewed.
