Exceptional bravery at sea

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is requesting nominations for the award for exceptional bravery at sea. The Icelandic Transport Authority receives nominations from parties who believe they have information about a person or group who has shown such bravery.


The award has been granted annually since 2007. Nations or organizations can nominate individuals or groups who have shown exceptional bravery in rescuing or assisting at sea.
The Icelandic Transport Authority receives nominations from parties who believe they have information about an individual or group who has shown such bravery. The incident must have occurred between 1 March 2024 and 28 February 2025.
Nominations shall be sent to the Icelandic Transport Authority by Monday 7 April 2025 at the email address samgongustofa@samgongustofa.is marked “Exceptional bravery to sea”.
Examples of bravery at sea
Among the award recipients in 2024 were Captain Avhilash Rawat and his crew on the oil tanker Marlin Luanda. They were honoured for their exceptional bravery, determination and perseverance in managing firefighting and preventing further damage when the ship caught fire after a rocket attack.
