On Tuesday, Samgöngustofa (the Icelandic Transport Authority) held its annual Traffic Safety Conference at Gamla Bíó. The conference was very well attended, with a full audience throughout the event. Jón Gunnar Jónsson, Director General of Samgöngustofa, opened the conference, followed by an address from Eyjólfur Ármannsson, Minister of Infrastructure, which can now be read on the Government of Iceland’s website.

Actor Óli Gunnar Gunnarsson served as moderator and did an exceptional job.

The voices and perspectives of younger road users were given greater prominence at this year’s conference. One representative came from a primary school, one was of secondary-school age, and one was a university student. They shared their experiences of traffic, their attitudes towards safety and regulations, and their own behaviour on the roads.

Experts from a range of fields shared their knowledge and experience, with a particular focus on young road users. An important dialogue took place between professionals from different fields, which will hopefully lead to fruitful cooperation on issues concerning road safety among young people.
