On April 30th, representatives from all five Oddfellow Lodges in Akureyri came together to present Akureyri Hospital (SAk) with a generous donation in support of the hospital's palliative care services. The total monetary gift amounted to ISK 1,245,000 and is intended to improve the facilities in a new family room on the internal medicine ward. In addition, the two women's lodges gifted the hospital two artworks by Oddfellow sisters Guðrún Lóa Leonardsdóttir and Guðrún Jóhannsdóttir (Guja), which will undoubtedly contribute to the warmth of the spaces.
This initiative is part of SAk's work in implementing the Ministry of Health's palliative care action plan, which runs through 2025. The plan emphasizes strengthening palliative and end-of-life care within the healthcare system, including establishing dedicated spaces and improving conditions for family members. The goal is to enhance the well-being of patients and their families during palliative and end-of-life care. On the internal medicine ward, two new palliative care rooms have been created, in addition to two previously existing ones now designated for this purpose. The family room has also been relocated, with significantly improved access.
Akureyri Hospital is deeply grateful for the support and generosity shown by the Oddfellow Lodges through this meaningful gift. Acts of kindness like this are incredibly valuable, and with this wonderful contribution, we can create a warm and comforting space for families.
