The Federation of Icelandic Merchants presents SAk with a generous donation

21st November 2025

The Federation of Icelandic Merchants has donated an adjustable training staircase worth ISK 2.5 million to Akureyri Hospital (SAk). The staircase is located by the surgical ward in SAk’s main building.

“Over the moon and deeply grateful.”

Kristín Margrét Gylfadóttir, Head of Rehabilitation and Geriatric Medicine Services, says that around 1,360 requests are received by physiotherapists in the emergency departments each year, where 6,500 treatments are provided. “There will therefore undoubtedly be many who can make use of this valuable gift,” says Kristín.

Ragnhildur Jónsdóttir, Chief Physiotherapist, describes the training staircase as a precious gift. “The staircase helps us help more people, and in a much safer way than before. It is important, for example, that patients get the opportunity after surgery to practice stairs—going up and down steps. This can be difficult on a conventional staircase, but with this training staircase the steps can be set at different heights, making it highly useful for training and adaptation. We are over the moon and deeply grateful for this unexpected and joyful gift,” says Ragnhildur.

“Wonderful to be able to support Akureyri Hospital.”

Ragnar Sverrisson, representative of the Federation of Icelandic Merchants, cut the ribbon on the training staircase, officially putting it into use. “It is, of course, absolutely wonderful to be able to support the work of Akureyri Hospital in this way—especially since it is clear that the gift will be put to good use,” says Ragnar.

Kristján Árnason and Sigríður Þórhallsdóttir, owners of the company Marco, which operates styrking.is and sells the training staircase, travelled north to attend the handover. Like the other attendees, they were very pleased to see the gift already in use
