Teaching Positions at the Department of Education and Science

25th June 2025

Bergþór Steinn Jónsson, specialist in emergency medicine, and Oddur Ólafsson, specialist in anaesthesiology and intensive care, have been appointed to formal positions at the Department of Education and Science at Akureyri Hospital (SAk). These are 20% positions with a focus on teaching and education.

Bergþór completed his specialist training in emergency medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and has also completed additional training in pediatric emergency medicine at Children’s Minnesota. He holds instructor certification in advanced life support for both adults and children and has already begun his work within the department.

Oddur has been actively involved in teaching at SAk for many years and possesses extensive experience. He is certified as an instructor in advanced life support for adults and children. He also holds specialized qualifications in simulation-based education and has been a very active simulation instructor for years. He will formally begin his new role this autumn.

The hospital’s teaching role is very important

“Oddur and Bergþór have both made valuable contributions to teaching within the department, and by appointing them to formal roles, we are ensuring they have more dedicated time for this important task of developing the department’s educational efforts,” says Hrafnhildur Lilja, Director of Education at the Department of Education and Science at SAk.

“It is incredibly valuable to gain this support. We hope they can assist us in better integrating quality and educational work, and in reviewing the hospital’s education plan. Clinical teaching must be in continuous development and hold a significant role in hospital operations – this supports ongoing professional development and fosters a culture of safety,” says Laufey Hrólfsdóttir, Head of the Department of Education and Science at SAk.
