Science Day of Akureyri Hospital (SAk) and the Health Sciences Research Institute of the University of Akureyri (HA) and SAk

17th September 2025

On Thursday, September 18, the Science Day of SAk and the Health Sciences Research Institute of HA and SAk will take place. The program features a diverse and engaging selection of presentations where staff members of SAk and their partners will present research and development projects. The event will be held in the conference room Kjarni at SAk and will also be streamed live on Teams.

Laufey Hrólfsdóttir, Head of the Education and Science Department at SAk, describes this year’s program as exceptionally varied. “The presentations reflect well the wide scope that characterizes the hospital’s scientific work. We are proud that strong and diverse scientific research is being carried out here in North Iceland.”

The Health Sciences Research Institute – a bridge between academia and healthcare

The Health Sciences Research Institute is a scientific research institute established through a framework agreement on cooperation between Akureyri Hospital and the University of Akureyri. Its goal is to strengthen teaching and research in health sciences by fostering collaboration and making the institutions’ scientific work more visible. The institutions also work together on building specialist education within the health sciences.

“Scientific research enhances the quality and safety of services”

As an example of particularly interesting presentations, Laufey mentions results from the international project European Registry of Cardiac Arrest. In addition, an exciting collaborative project will be introduced, where a new EEG-US device for brain wave recording and ultrasound will be tested. Master’s students and medical residents at SAk will also present their final projects, addressing, among other topics, emergency medicine and improvements in healthcare services. The program clearly demonstrates how scientific research strengthens the quality and safety of healthcare.

The event is open to everyone – both those who wish to attend in person at Kjarni and those who prefer to follow along via Teams – you are warmly welcome.
