Magdalena graduated with a medical degree in 1993 from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Iceland and obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1998. She completed her specialist training at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, qualifying as a specialist in pulmonology in 2005.

Magdalena worked at Reykjalundur from 2006 to 2021, alongside pursuing training in rehabilitation medicine, and received specialist certification as a rehabilitation physician in 2019. She began working at the Grensás Department of Landspítali in January 2022, initially as a consultant physician and has served as chief physician since 1 November 2023.
