New facility for responders in the northeast
24th October 2024
Members of the SAk operational board visited new responders control center in Northeast Iceland in Akureyri.
A new responders control center has been opened in the premises of the Súlur, the rescue team in Akureyri. It was considered necessary to update the facility and it was moved to another larger space within the building.
The control center had proved its worth during the storm in December 2019 and through the COVID-19 period where it was manned for months.
According to the government’s policy on civil protection and security from 2021, a command center should be established in each police department in Iceland to manage and direct operations in civil protection situations as well as when other coordination of response parties is needed.
“Ingimar and I were invited to see the new facility and feel that it looks good. SAk’s members on the operational board sit alongside HSN’s representatives, but participation in the operational management is generally made by representatives from the police, the Akureyri Fire Department, the regional management of rescue teams, HSN, SAk and the Icelandic Police Commissioner,” says Erla Björnsdóttir, Managing Director of Human Resources, who is on the operational board of SAk with Ingimar Eydal, Head of the School for emergency medical technicians.
