25th September 2025
Applications are invited for medical specialist training positions in those fields of medicine where accredited specialist training is offered at Landspítali, Akureyri Hospital, and their partner institutions. The positions are full-time (100%) or by agreement.

The starting date is 23 February 2026; however, the commencement of the position may alternatively be arranged in consultation with the training director of each specialty.
The introductory day for specialist training will be held on 26 February 2026 and attendance is mandatory.
Specialist medical training in Iceland has developed rapidly in recent years. Today, specialist training is offered in most core medical disciplines in Iceland in line with international quality standards.
The majority of training takes place at Landspítali University Hospital and Akureyri Hospital. Other partner institutions include the West Iceland Health Institute in Akranes, the National Hearing and Speech Institute of Iceland, and Reykjalundur Rehabilitation Centre. Where collaboration has been formally established between Landspítali and a partner institution in a given specialty, specialist trainees are expected to train at both sites.
The training positions advertised here are specialty training pathways in Iceland that have been approved by the Evaluation and Competence Committee in accordance with Regulation No. 856/2023. Specialist training follows the accredited curriculum of each discipline and is supported by an assessment and supervision system led by qualified supervisors.
Doctoral studies may be pursued alongside clinical specialist training. If an approved PhD research plan has already been accepted, the applicant may apply for such a combined position. In that case, the appointment would involve at least a 50% position at Landspítali (or as otherwise agreed), with the duration of clinical training extended accordingly, in line with Regulation No. 856/2023. Applicants must specifically indicate such requests in the comments section of the application and in their cover letter. A copy of the approved PhD research plan must accompany the application.
