Improvements and Development of Mental Health Services
20th June 2025
Following a comprehensive review by the Directorate of Health of the mental health services at Akureyri Hospital (SAk), extensive improvements have been initiated to enhance the services and improve conditions for both patients and staff. A targeted improvement plan has been systematically implemented with the aim of strengthening SAk’s mental health services.

Quality work and professionalism in focus
Staffing stability has been a key priority in recent months. Two new specialist doctors have been hired. The management team of the mental health service has also been strengthened with the appointment of a department manager, an assistant manager for the day and outpatient departments, and continued clinical leadership by the chief physician.
Facilities undergoing thorough review
Extensive renovations have recently been completed in the inpatient ward, improving both comfort and safety. Plans are in place for a new mental health building that will house the inpatient, day, and outpatient services under one roof – featuring modern, user-centered solutions. The new facility is expected to be completed and operational by 2028.
“There has been a significant improvement in the patient environment and staff working conditions following the renovations to the inpatient ward. The environment feels warmer, which positively affects patient well-being, and safety measures have been improved. Better working conditions have also led to increased job satisfaction and productivity among staff, which has a positive impact on the care provided,” says Bergþóra H. Bergþórsdóttir, nurse at the inpatient psychiatric ward.
User-centered changes
The goal of all improvements is to enhance accessibility, continuity, and quality of care – with the user at the center. “This improvement work has been extensive and demanding but has also given the staff long-awaited space to focus on professional development and to follow through with improvements, always with the users' well-being in mind,” says Valdís Eyja Pálsdóttir, psychologist at the outpatient psychiatric clinic.
SAk’s mental health services play a vital role in rural Iceland, serving residents of North and East Iceland. Through continued improvements and targeted development, efforts are being made to ensure safe, seamless, and professional services – that meet modern standards and user expectations.
