Geriatric Team at the Department of Internal Medicine, SAk
5th November 2025
Efforts are underway to strengthen geriatric medicine at Akureyri Hospital (SAk) in line with the changing needs of society. It is clear that the number of older individuals is increasing rapidly, a development that has sometimes been referred to as the “silver storm”

On October 6, a three-month pilot project began in which specialists in geriatric medicine are providing care for ten patients in the Department of Internal Medicine at SAk. These include both elderly patients and those receiving palliative or end-of-life care. The goal of the team is to place greater emphasis on comprehensive geriatric assessment for older individuals. For patients in palliative or end-of-life care, the team has considerable experience in this field and focuses on effective symptom management and providing support to patients and their families.
“It is very gratifying that we are able to take on new projects and become more visible within the Department of Internal Medicine. The first month has exceeded our expectations, and exciting times are ahead for geriatric medicine at SAk,” says Valgerður Þorsteinsdóttir, specialist in geriatric medicine.
