Generous Gift from Síðuskóli Students to the SAk Children's Ward

6th June 2025

The Children's Ward at Akureyri Hospital (SAk) recently received a truly generous gift when students in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade at Síðuskóli decided to donate ISK 550,000 to the ward’s support fund. The students raised the money by selling handmade items and refreshments during the Children's Culture Festival in April.

At the handover ceremony, which took place at the school on June 2nd, Elma Rún Ingvarsdóttir, pediatric nursing specialist at SAk, accepted the donation. She emphasized how valuable community support is for the ward – especially when it comes from children themselves:

“It was incredibly heartwarming and touching to receive this generous donation from the students at Síðuskóli,” said Elma Rún. “I sincerely thanked them on behalf of the Children's Ward and told them that, unfortunately, children sometimes need to stay in the hospital – and when that happens, we want them to feel as comfortable as possible.”

She went on to explain how the donation will be used:

“We plan to use the funds to purchase Lazyboy chairs for the children's rooms. These will be a great comfort for both children and their parents during hospital stays – especially when children need to be in isolation and confined to their room. In those situations, having a cozy chair to relax, read, or cuddle in can make a big difference.”

According to Elma Rún, community support plays a vital role in the development and environment of the ward:

“Without support from the community, the Children's Ward wouldn’t be as well equipped as we want it to be. We’ve been fortunate to receive fantastic support over the years – and this gift from the children of Síðuskóli is a beautiful example of that.”

At the ceremony, representatives from all three grades stood on stage along with their teacher, Hafdís María Tryggvadóttir, to present the donation. Accompanying the gift was a heartfelt card, which read:

“Dear Children's Ward, today, June 2nd, we are depositing ISK 550,000 into the SAk support account. We, the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades at Síðuskóli, raised this money by selling items and coffee during the Children's Culture Festival in April. We hope the funds will be put to good use. Sincerely, the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades at Síðuskóli.”

Akureyri Hospital extends its heartfelt thanks to the students and staff of Síðuskóli for their invaluable support and warmth.
