Every minute counts: Let’s get every AED on the map

16th October 2026

To mark World Restart a Heart Day today, 16 October, owners and those responsible for automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are encouraged to register their devices on a new AED map. The aim is to help the public and Iceland’s 112 emergency service locate an AED when a cardiac arrest occurs, as every minute can make a life-saving difference.

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can be found throughout Iceland, including in workplaces, sports facilities, schools and other public buildings. When a cardiac arrest occurs, knowing where to find the nearest AED is crucial. Registering AEDs on the map will make it easier for the public and Iceland’s 112 emergency service to locate them quickly and respond when it matters most.

Registering an AED is easy

AED registration is already underway, and efforts are being made to register as many devices as possible before the map is officially launched.

The registration process is simple and takes only a few minutes. AED owners and those responsible for their maintenance can also choose whether the device’s location is visible to the public or accessible only to the 112 emergency service.

AED owners and those responsible for them are therefore encouraged to take part in the project and register the devices in their care.

Þorbjörg Katrín Davíðsdóttir, who works in the Education and Science Department at Akureyri Hospital, is the project manager for AED registration: “This is an important project, as every minute between cardiac arrest and defibrillation makes an enormous difference. The shorter the time, the greater the hope. I encourage everyone—individuals, businesses and institutions alike—to register their AEDs.”
