Akureyri Hospital (SAk) has started using a new Hemoscreen point-of-care testing device in its Accident and Emergency department. The device is a donation from the Friends of SAk and marks an important step in enhancing the speed and quality of patient services.

Point-of-care testing (POCT) refers to tests performed near the patient, outside of a conventional laboratory. Such equipment can support faster diagnosis and decision-making in treatment, which can be crucial in emergency situations.
“The goal of point-of-care testing is to support faster and more targeted clinical decisions, without compromising the quality or traceability of test results,” says Inga Stella Pétursdóttir, Head of the Laboratory Department at SAk.
The Hemoscreen device improves access to modern tests directly on-site, thereby supporting more efficient procedures in the A&E department. The results from the measurements are recorded electronically in the hospital's laboratory information system, just like other test results, which ensures the safety, traceability, and continuity of patient care.
“The device is an important addition to the progress that has taken place in the implementation of point-of-care testing at SAk. The donation from the Friends of SAk is very significant here and allows us to enhance the service even further,” says Inga Stella.
Kristín Ósk Ragnarsdóttir, Head of the A&E Department at SAk, says the device has a positive impact on the department's daily work: “In A&E, time is of the essence, and being able to get results quickly, right at the patient's bedside, supports better and safer decision-making. This device is therefore a very valuable addition to our operations.”
According to Jóhannes G. Bjarnason, chairman of the Friends of SAk association, it is a particular pleasure to be able to contribute to the development of the service:
“It is very important to us at the Friends of SAk to support the hospital's activities. With this donation, we want to do our part to improve facilities and enhance patient services.”
In recent years, SAk has built up a robust system of point-of-care testing with several devices connected to the hospital's laboratory information system. The introduction of the Hemoscreen strengthens that system even further, especially in emergency services where time is critical.
The use of the device is subject to specialised staff training, and all operations are conducted according to strict quality standards under the professional supervision of the SAk Laboratory Department.
The donation from the Friends of SAk is an important contribution to healthcare services in North Iceland and supports the hospital's continued development in line with modern demands.
