Changes to Rehabilitation and Geriatric Medicine Services
2nd October 2025
Our goal at Akureyri Hospital is to ensure coordinated, professional, and targeted rehabilitation and geriatric medicine services for our patients.

The management of the Rehabilitation Unit in Kristnes, in collaboration with the hospital’s executive board, has worked diligently on developing a strategy for rehabilitation services, with the aim of providing high-quality care, in the right place and at the right time, to the groups most in need of specialized, interdisciplinary rehabilitation.
As part of this effort, it has been decided that as of January 1, 2026, the Rehabilitation Unit in Kristnes will be reorganized into a five-day unit along with a day unit, with a clear focus on specialized, interdisciplinary rehabilitation for people of all ages.
At the same time, work will be carried out to strengthen rehabilitation services in the hospital’s acute care departments, along with the establishment of a geriatric medicine team within internal medicine, whose role will be to enhance services for the elderly in the hospital’s acute departments.
To follow through on these changes, a steering group will be established, consisting of representatives from rehabilitation and geriatric medicine services, acute care units, and others. The role of this group will be to support and oversee the implementation process as well as to evaluate outcomes.
Changes of this nature inevitably come with challenges, but through joint effort, we hope these changes will result in more efficient rehabilitation and geriatric services.
