18th December 2023

A total of 30 people applied for positions of junior doctor in foundation training at the Akureyri Hospital for the academic year 2024-2025.

Junior doctors in training-1

The junior doctor foundation training year is the first part of the formal specialized medical training in Iceland and a time of experience and learning for newly graduated doctors. The training places are approved by the assessment and qualification committee as full-fledged study centers. Work is currently underway to sort through the applications for the year 2024-2025. A total of 30 specialist doctors applied for a place at SAk, which is a record number of applications.

"For the last few years, we have worked systematically to attract specialist doctors and junior doctors in foundation training. For example, we had promotional videos made that we have used in connection with events and science trips and were presented at Læknadagar (english: Doctors' Days). There, we tried to give the student doctors an insight into the daily work at SAk and about the quality of life in Akureyri. In Akureyri there are great opportunities for outdoor activities and short access to everything," says Laufey Hrólfsdóttir, head of the education and science department.

The Department of Education and Science has organized a presentation for future specialist doctors with food and drinks where the study opportunities at SAk are presented. Hannes Petersen, head of teaching at SAk, has been in charge of the presentation: "SAk offers doctors and medical students a good working environment where they can approach a wide range of subjects under good guidance. At the same time, they get plenty of opportunities to make their own steps safely."

Additional benefits

The hospital offers good conditions and tries to help student doctors find housing. "We offer certain additional benefits such as a housing allowance, transport allowance and permanent overtime for specialist doctors and specialist junior doctors in foundation training at SAk. We know that it can be difficult to relocate, so we want to support student doctors who are interested in coming to Akureyri," concludes Laufey.

Summer jobs for medical students

SAk has now opened applications for medical students for next summer. These are jobs in the emergency room, the internal medical ward, the psychiatric ward and the surgical ward (surgery and orthopaedics).
