The purpose of the study is to find good and fair locations for helicopters that are used for medical transport in Iceland (special helicopters and/or rescue helicopters that are also used for medical transport). An action analysis will be carried out, which is a specific branch of applied mathematics that uses models to find good solutions to complex problems. Data from the emergency hotline and population density data from Statistics Iceland will be used. The findings will enable researchers to propose helicopter base locations that best meet the needs of society and to balance and even improve the prospects of critically ill and injured patients.

Björn has worked as an aeromedical examiner almost constantly since 1996, including on helicopters in the United States, air ambulances in Iceland and rescue helicopters in Norway. His co-researchers are sports scientist Kristrún María Björnsdóttir, emergency room physician Sveinbjörn Dúason, and business manager Dr Ármann Ingólfsson, professor of operations management at the University of Alberta School of Business.

We would like to congratulate Bear and his co-researchers on their grant!
