• Patients and relatives can apply to rent an apartment in care of the home care memorial fund. The apartment is located at Gata sólinnar 6, near Kjarnaskógur.

• The Akureyri hospital in and the The Healthcare Institution of North Iceland operate the facility.

Persons undergoing end-of-life treatment have priority in renting the apartment.

The apartment is rented for a maximum of one week at a time.

About the apartment

The apartment is around 100 square meters in size, equipped with:

• three rooms with sleeping space for 5

• two bathrooms with shower

• kitchen with basic household appliances and equipment as well as microwave oven and dishwasher

• tableware for 12 people

• television and internet access

Washing machine and dryer are in outdoor storage. The terrace has outdoor furniture.

Rental costs

• Every 24 hours is 4,500 ISK.

• Weekly rent is 25,000 ISK.

Delivery of keys

A key box is located at the house. Tenant receives information about a number at the start of the rental.

• Palliative care

Palliative care is symptomatic treatment where the aim is to predict, prevent and reduce physical, psychosocial and emotional distress. Palliative care is only started when diagnosis of severe diseases and is given concurrent life-prolonging/curing treatment. When this treatment is not effective, or if the patient refuses such treatment, the importance of palliative care increases with the progression of the disease. In recent years there has been a growing emphasis on early emphases in palliative care.

• End-of-life treatment

End-of-life treatment starts when the patient is dying (days/weeks) with the emphasis of treatment only to reduce symptoms and distress and ensure that the patient can die with dignity. End-of-life care does not include resuscitation, intensive care or other invasive procedures.

Doctors and nurses apply for home care for clients.

Start of service

After the application has been approved it, the nurse contacts the client or relatives with their consent within five days, sooner if necessary. Together they will agree on a first meeting. As soon contact has been made, the client can use the on-call home care service around the clock.
