Services
The Sleep Center at Landspítali specializes in diagnosing and treating sleep-related disorders, such as sleep apnea and other sleep disturbances.
Sleep Studies are done
At home: Patients collect the monitoring equipment from security staff on the 1st floor and use it overnight at home.
In hospital: Patients stay overnight at Landspítali, where monitoring equipment is set up for the study. The examination is performed on C7, 7th floor.
How to get into a sleep study
A referral from a general practitioner or specialist is required.
A notification letter is sent once placed on the waiting list.
When the test is scheduled, you will receive an invitation with the date — sent through Heilsuvera for a home sleep study, or by phone for a department-based examination.
Treatment with CPAP Machines
The Sleep Center provides treatment for sleep apnea.
Most diagnosed patients begin CPAP therapy (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure).
Treatment and device setup start either at home or at the Sleep Center.
Staff provide education, support, and follow-up care.
CPAP machines are owned by Icelandic Health (SÍ) and require a rental fee.
Follow-Up & Monitoring
Remote monitoring (AirView) is available for the first three months with patient consent.
Staff review treatment progress and reach out if usage is insufficient or ineffective.
If no contact is made, it means the data shows good usage and results.
If you are unsatisfied with your treatment, contact the Sleep Center for assistance.
Follow up first 3 months
Remote monitoring, with staff intervention if needed.
Follow up
It is important for your well-being and treatment to change the mask, humidifier, and tubing at least once a year. See here: Phone number, opening hours and location | Landspítali.
We encourage you to book a follow-up appointment at the Sleep Center every 2–3 years, sooner if needed. It is necessary to bring the device and all equipment to the scheduled appointment.
Equipment Renewal
To renew equipment, you can send an email to svefnmidstodin@landspitali.is. Please include your ID number, mask type, and size in the email.
You can also call on weekdays between 08:15 and 12:15: 543 6025.
Faulty Device
If you believe the device is not working properly or an error message appears, please contact the Sleep Center by phone at 543-6025 or by email at svefnmidstodin@landspitali.is
We encourage you to describe the malfunction or your concerns as clearly as possible and specify what message appears on the device. You will likely be asked to bring in the device for inspection, which may take a few days to process.
End of Treatment
If your treatment is to be concluded, the device must be returned to the Sleep Center.
Please return the device, but dispose of the mask, hose, and humidifier chamber.
Leave a note in the bag with your ID number and the reason for ending the treatment.
Secretaries will receive the device, and the return date will be recorded as the date the secretary logs it out.
Appointments
Booking or changing appointments for those undergoing treatment with sleep apnea devices: weekdays 13:00–15:45, tel. 543 6025.
Booking or changing appointments for those coming in for a sleep study (diagnosis): weekdays 09:00–12:00 and 13:00–15:00, tel. 543 6035.
It is not possible to deliver replacement equipment directly at the department without prior consultation with the staff by phone or email.
AirSense 11
For your information: A new version of the sleep apnea device was introduced this year. The new version provides exactly the same treatment as the previous one. We would like to emphasize that the older AirSense 10 model will not be replaced with AirSense 11 until the message “Motor Life Exceeded” appears on the screen. The expected lifespan of the devices is approximately 20,000 hours.
