Staff at Landspítali order an interpreter when needed and make sure that patients receive and understand important information such as:

• health and prognoses

• the treatment envisaged, risks and benefits

• alternatives and the consequences of doing nothing

• the possibility of getting another doctor's opinion

Information should be given immediately, so that the patient can make informed decisions about their treatment.

• Staff confirm and document the provision of interpretation in the patient's medical record.

• An agreement is in place with the International Center (Alþjóðasetur) to ensure access to interpretation services for patients who do not speak Icelandic.
