The Healthcare Institution of North Iceland to Take Over Operation of Hornbrekka in Ólafsfjörður
9th December 2025
The Healthcare Institution of North Iceland (HSN) has been entrusted with taking over the operation of the nursing home Hornbrekka in Ólafsfjörður, Fjallabyggð, following Fjallabyggð’s termination of its agreement to manage the facility. HSN is expected to assume responsibility for the operation no later than April 1, 2026.

Hornbrekka has 22 residential and nursing care units. The facility currently employs approximately 28 full-time equivalents, with 38 permanent staff members and an additional 16 employees providing relief work in various roles related to the institution’s operations. Staff will be offered continued employment with HSN.
“With the transfer of operations to HSN, the future of the nursing home will be secured, and further development of its services in connection with healthcare in the region will be possible. We anticipate professional synergy through the integration of Hornbrekka into HSN, as its staff will gain access to HSN’s information and quality systems, along with opportunities for robust professional development and continuing education. We look forward to welcoming new colleagues to the HSN team” says Jón Helgi Björnsson, CEO of HSN.+
Administratively, Hornbrekka will fall under the HSN unit currently responsible for the hospital in Siglufjörður and the primary healthcare centers in Dalvík, Ólafsfjörður, and Siglufjörður. HSN operates over 200 nursing and hospital beds across North Iceland, including facilities in Blönduós, Skagaströnd, Sauðárkrókur, Siglufjörður, and Húsavík. The integration of Hornbrekka aligns well with the institution’s overall operations.
