Stronger Infrastructure and Growing Job Satisfaction Despite Challenges
15th May 2025
HSN annual meeting

The annual meeting of the Health Institution of North Iceland (HSN) took place at Hof in Akureyri on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. The results for the fiscal year 2024 were presented. Despite operational challenges, there was very positive development in operations, services, and human resources, giving reason for optimism for the future.
The year's operating deficit amounted to 431 million ISK, mainly due to new wage and institutional agreements that have not yet been fully funded.
The "Well-being at Work" project started in late 2024. Its goal is to improve the work environment and promote better employee health, aiming to reduce illness due to working conditions.
HSN significantly increased its score in the "Institution of the Year" survey, from 3.76 to 4.1. The score is based on employee satisfaction, management, and the institution's image. HSN moved from 35th-36th place to 15th-18th place among large institutions. The focus will continue to be on strengthening a positive workplace culture and a good image – key factors in retaining good staff and attracting new ones.
New premises in Akureyri: HSN's health clinic in Akureyri began operations in well-organized premises in Sunnuhlíð, and psychosocial services along with HSN offices in Hvannavellir.
Health-promoting workplace: The project started in Akureyri along with a new team work arrangement aimed at improving organization, promoting employee satisfaction, and increasing continuity in client services. Implementation is now underway at more workplaces.
Stronger psychosocial services: A new children's mental health team started operations. HSN now offers both psychological and mental health team services for children and adults.
Establishment of the Akureyri Clinic: HSN, in collaboration with SAk, has launched an important service for individuals with ME disease, a chronic fatigue syndrome.
"Good to Age" in Dalvíkurbyggð: The project was implemented with the transfer of home nursing to the Dalbær nursing home. New services include evening home nursing services along with support from a rehabilitation team and a liaison counselor.
Jón Helgi Björnsson, CEO of HSN: "Despite operational challenges, we are very pleased with HSN's progress this year. There was very positive development that has led to increased job satisfaction and improved services for clients in this vast area. We have utilized welfare technology to increase safety and improve services, and staffing has been better than before – we have been very fortunate with new hires. After this tenth anniversary year of HSN, we look forward to the future with a new strategy and work plan, and great drive in our excellent staff."
