New Nursing Home Planned in Norðurþing – Agreement Signed

28th May 2025

Inga Sæland, Minister of Social Affairs and Housing, and Katrín Sigurjónsdóttir, Mayor of Norðurþing, formally signed an agreement on Friday, May 23, marking a major step toward the construction of a new nursing home in the municipality.

The facility, which will include approximately 60 rooms, is expected to significantly improve services for the elderly in the region as well as working conditions for staff.

According to the agreement, Norðurþing will provide the land for the project, and a call for tenders to construct the nursing home will be issued in the near future. Construction is expected to begin in December this year or January 2026, with completion scheduled by the end of 2027. The state will then lease the building under a long-term rental agreement lasting 20 to 30 years.

The signing ceremony was held in a festive atmosphere, attended by numerous guests, including residents of the current nursing home, Hvammur, and staff from the Healthcare Institution of North Iceland (HSN). The mood was joyful, as the occasion represents a milestone for the entire community.

A musical performance added a special touch to the event, with Heilsutríóið taking the stage and delivering a heartfelt performance. The trio, composed of current and former HSN staff members from Húsavík, was warmly received and brought smiles to many faces.
