New Ambulance Service Agreement Signed

5th June 2025

Today, June 5th, Jón Helgi Björnsson, Director of the Healthcare Institution of North Iceland, and Sigfús Ingi Sigfússon, Mayor of Skagafjörður, signed a new agreement regarding ambulance services.

The agreement, which will be valid for the next five years, covers ambulance services in Skagafjörður, excluding the Fljót area, which is served by Fjallabyggð. The Skagafjörður Fire Department will continue to handle the implementation of the agreement, as it has in previous years.

There is a long-standing tradition of cooperation between the Healthcare Institution of North Iceland, the municipality of Skagafjörður, and the Skagafjörður Fire Department regarding ambulance services. The contracting parties are therefore very pleased that an agreement has been secured for ambulance services in Skagafjörður for the coming years. A key new feature in the agreement is the introduction of a so-called single-responder system, in addition to traditional ambulance and inter-facility transport services. This system is intended for inter-facility transfers involving simpler healthcare services that do not require a specialized ambulance.
