Without Icelandic health insurance
If you come from an EEA country or the Nordic countries (including Icelanders with legal domicile there), you can pay the same fee as insured individuals in Iceland provided certain conditions are met.
If there are no international social security agreements, special rules apply to payments for healthcare services in Iceland.
Price list for non-insured
If you come from an EEA country or the Nordic countries (also Icelandic citizens legally domiciled there) and require medical assistance in Iceland, you can pay the same fee as insured individuals in Iceland if you present a valid:
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Provisional certificate
Passport or other photo identification confirming nationality.
Tourists from the Nordic countries confirm residency with an EHIC, provisional certificate, or health insurance card from their country of residence, along with photo ID.
All documents must be valid. If a patient fails to present a valid EHIC and passport, they will be charged as if they are not insured.
Staff at the health center make photocopies of the EHIC, passport, and the physician’s report. The documents are sent to the Finance Department of Heilsugæsla höfuðborgarsvæðisins, which forwards them together with an invoice to Iceland Health (Sjúkratryggingar Íslands).
A connection between Heilsugæsla höfuðborgarsvæðisins and Iceland Health updates the insurance status of patients once a day. The Saga system shows the correct insurance status of individuals whether the person is covered by health insurance or not.
Heilsugæsla höfuðborgarsvæðisins has a department for fee collection. They can be contacted via email at innheimta@heilsugaeslan.is.
