At the end of the year, the Act on the unemployment insurance fund for fish processing workers will expire. As of January 1st 2025, companies in processing stoppages cannot apply for payments from the Directorate of Labor because of raw material shortages. In some cases, employees of fish processing plants in processing stoppages may apply and have the right to unemployment insurance for the duration of the processing stoppage.

The employee in question must meet the conditions for active job search, including being willing to take up a job regardless of whether it is full-time or part-time or working on a shift. A new arrangement after the amendments to the Act is that if the employer removes an employee from the wage register according to Article 3 of Act No. 19/1979, the employee in question must apply for unemployment benefits from the Directorate of Labour. If the situation lasts longer than three days, he/she is entitled to unemployment insurance during the period of the employment register, subject to other conditions. The applicant must also meet the conditions for active job search, including being willing to take up a job regardless of whether it is full-time or part-time or working on a shift.
