Support for salaries of people working in Grindavík
17th November 2023
The Icelandic government approved at its meeting this morning the bill by Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, on temporary support for wages for people working in Grindavík.
The Act covers employees on the general labour market who cannot attend work because their establishment is located in Grindavík. The objective of the Act is to protect the survival of the individuals in question by ensuring their salary up to a certain maximum. The objective of the Act is also to maintain the employment relationship between employers and employees so that as many of those who work in Grindavík as possible will maintain their jobs.
The state is expected to pay a maximum amount that will go up in wages for employees and self-employed individuals and the support paid by the state can be up to ISK 633,000 per month plus a contribution to the pension fund. This is the same maximum amount that the Guarantee Fund for Wages pays.
If individuals who are subject to the law do not receive paid wages, despite the abovementioned remedy, they will be able to receive support from the Directorate of Labour, provided certain conditions are fulfilled.
The Directorate of Labour is responsible for implementing the Act and work has begun on the application process. More information on when applications can be made will be provided in the coming days.
