Right of citizens of Venezuela to work

5th October 2023

In light of discussions on the employment rights of Venezuelan citizens who have applied for international protection following the ruling of the Immigration Appeals Board, the Directorate of Labour would like to make the following statement.

Citizens of Venezuela who have been granted a residence permit on the basis of international protection are exempt from the requirement for a work permit and are authorized to work on the domestic labour market without restrictions. If the employer wishes to verify that such a permit is available, the persons concerned may request to present a residence permit certificate.

Citizens of Venezuela who have not received a final answer to an application for international protection but have a valid temporary work and residence permit, retain their right to work with the employer in accordance with the issued work permit. If an application is made for an extension of the permit, an application must be submitted to the Directorate of Immigration before the previous permit expires. If the Directorate of Immigration considers that the conditions for the extension of a temporary residence permit are fulfilled, the Directorate of Labour will be able to extend the work permit if other conditions are fulfilled.

Further inquiries regarding residence permits must be addressed to the Directorate of Immigration.
